Teams

Birch - Birch team is named after Eugenius Birch who designed Blackpool’s first pier in 1863.  We take the piers for granted but for the Victorians it must have been very exciting to walk out over the sea and see the town. 

Fields - The team is named after Frederick Fields who was responsible for setting up the Illuminations department and depot, which still exists today.  When the Illuminations started in 1879 there were only 8 electric lamps!  Now there are millions and it’s one of the things that Blackpool is most famous for.

Grundy - The Grundy Pastoral team has blue as its    colour and got its name from two famous brothers, John and Cuthbert Grundy who started the Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool’s town centre.

Matcham - The team is named after Frank Matcham who designed the world famous Tower Ballroom that is featured in so many TV shows.  He also was the architect for Blackpool’s Grand   Theatre and as such is important to Blackpool.
